What happened to baby Jessica?
On 14 October 1987, Jessica McClure – aged just 18 months old at the time – was playing in her aunt’s back garden when she fell down an eight inch-wide well.
Jessica fell 22ft before she became stuck with her leg above her head.
It’s hard to imagine how it would be possible to fall down such a narrow well, but in a simulation created by Zack D. Films, baby Jessica can be seen hurtling down the pipe before getting stuck.
In the clip, Jessica is playing in the garden before she steps backwards on top of the hole.
While one leg immediately falls into the well, her other leg ends up above her head as she hurtles down the pipe.
She then becomes stuck on a dogleg within the narrow opening, where she remained for 56 tense hours.
So, how was Jessica rescued?
Incredibly, authorities managed to drill a hole adjacent to the well, before lowering a ladder into the shaft and drilling through hard rock to eventually reach the child.
After inserting a microphone into the well, rescuers were able to hear Jessica singing Winnie the Pooh, which reassured them that she was still alive.
Eventually, a paramedic climbed down the drilled shaft and was able to return with the little one.
The toddler suffered a cut to her head and also had to have her toe amputated due to an infection caused by having her foot elevated for so long.
Now a mom herself, Jessica says she cannot remember the incident at all.
Speaking to People, she said: “I had God on my side that day.
“My life is a miracle. I’m hoping my children learn from [my rescue] to always be humble.
“And to remember that if you look hard enough, there are so many good people in this world.”
People continue to be shocked by Jessica’s story even today.
Commenting on the simulation clip on YouTube, one viewer said: “Mad respect to this rescuers for not giving up and saving the poor girl. Truly amazing work.”
While another added: “I remember when that happened. It was 1987 and in Texas. I had just moved there and I had a child about her age. Jessica Mclure was her name I believe. All of us prayed so hard for that baby.”
And a third wrote: “This just made me feel so bad for that baby to go through that. So so so beyond grateful for the people who helped her! Can’t imagine her family’s relief once she made it out!”
